Almonds are a good source of protein for people who follow a plant-based diet. They’re also high in calcium and a good source of vitamin E. They have so many health benefits and we love to eat them raw or toasted as a snack. They’re also great to add to your dishes or to make your own almond milk.

Introducing The Almond Girl’s almonds – A taste of South African tradition

In 1974, a dream took root when Rino Brochetto, a determined Italian immigrant, purchased a plot of land in the fertile valleys of the Klein Karoo. With unwavering commitment, he envisioned cultivating almonds in this idyllic region, blending his Italian heritage with the South African landscape. Rino’s pioneering spirit inspired his daughter, Angela, and son-in-law, Hans, to join him in 1989. Together, they embarked on the remarkable journey of establishing the very first commercial almond farm in South Africa.

With dedication and resilience, the Brochetto family overcame numerous challenges, relying solely on their own efforts, ingenuity, and the wisdom of the land. Through years of trial and error, they transformed virgin soil into a thriving almond farm, crafting a unique fusion of South African and Italian traditions.

Today, as the third generation of this family business, Hans and Angela’s son, Stephan and their daughter, Réni, joined the family farm bringing a fresh perspective to the legacy. Réni also established her online shop www.thealmondgirl.co.za for smaller clients. We purchase her almonds in bulk, enabling customers to refill their containers in-store. And what about online shoppers? Well, we’ve got you covered! Our dedicated team will hand-pack your desired quantity in a brown paper bag, ensuring your parcel reaches your door without a trace of plastic!

What sets The Almond Girl apart?

They only plant GMO-free almond trees, while their almonds, though not organic, are rigorously tested for pesticide residue – results always come back clean. Their products are Halaal and Kosher friendly. Plus, they take pride in offering an unpasteurized product, ensuring you savor the pure essence of this flavorful fusion. As an avid trail runner, Réni understands the value of wholesome, nourishing snacks. That’s why she’s thrilled to bring you the freshest and highest-quality local almonds, straight from their family farm.

So, when you choose The Almond Girl’s almonds, you’re not just choosing a premium snack – you’re embracing a unique blend of South African and Italian traditions and supporting a family’s enduring commitment to quality and sustainability. Taste the fusion, savor the story, and enjoy almonds with a heritage as rich as their flavour!

How to make your own almond milk

We love this recipe where you only need two ingredients: almonds and water. You will also need a nut milk bag. We don’t currently stock them, but you can also use one of our fresh produce bags. If you don’t have time to make your own milk, check out our oat milk in glass bottles here.

How to add healthy fats to your diet

An easy way to add healthy fats to your diet is including some fiber- and nutrient-rich fat sources such as almonds, cashew nuts, chia seeds, tahini, hummus, avocado and peanut butter. According to registered dietitian, Jessica Kotlowitz,RD MSc Nutr., even though olive oil is a “good fat” (because it doesn’t increase risk of heart disease) it is definitely still a calorie dense food and can add a lot of calories into your diet without adding much satiety or nutritional value. Compare 20g of almonds =115 calories (2.5g fiber and 4g protein) versus 1 tbsp olive oil = (0g fiber and 0g protein)

Jessica says if you are on a weight loss journey, adding less oil to your foods and replacing oil with more high-fiber, satiating fat sources such as nuts or seeds can help you to lower your calorie intake whilst feeling fuller and taking in more nutrients and protein. She advises her patients who are trying to gain or maintain weight, to include moderate amounts of oil in their diet but still try to include some fiber- and nutrient-rich fat sources.
